Bayan Muna moves to de-criminalize libel anew
Removing Sword of Damocles over media

Saying that existing libel statutes are inconsistent with the Constitution and are a hindrance to the people's right to know, Bayan Muna representatives Teddy Casiño and Neri Colmenares have re-filed an important measure removing the crime of libel from the Revised Penal Code.

HB 1009 repeals Articles 353, 354, 355, 356, 357, 360, 361, and 362 of Act No. 3815 that specify libel in the Revised Penal Code.

Aquino must stop the killings of activists
There will be no end to the extrajudicial killings of activists unless Pres. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III drives the decisive blow against impunity. He must act now before another life is taken.

Seven members and supporters of our parties, including a municipal councilor, a human rights lawyer and a public school teacher, have been murdered since after the May 10, 2010 elections. In the first two weeks of the new administration, three activists were slain.

Casiño: Remove VAT and other onerous charges, rationalize power generation
Anti-consumer electricity rate hike

“We cannot go on accepting the problematic situation of electricity hikes foisted on the majority of consumers and while we have power distributors and so-called independent power producers (IPPs) laughing all the way to the bank. Immediate action must be done to at least mitigate our rising electricity bills.”

Thus declared Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño following the announcement of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) on Tuesday of a “slight” increase in rates by 5.8 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in July due to a generation charge hike to P5.6546 per kWh.

Casiño: Truth Commission should prioritize killings of activists and journalists
IN the wake of two extrajudicial killings early into the Aquino administration, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teddy Casiño today strongly recommended that the Truth Commission being formed by the Aquino administration “should focus on cases that really need fact-finding, like the extrajudicial killings (EJKs) of activists and journalists, rather than cases that have already been extensively investigated like the graft-ridden NBN-ZTE deal, the fertilizer fund scam and the Hello Garci controversy.”

Pres. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III called for the Truth Commission (but has yet to issue an executive order) to resolve the corruption controversies that hounded the nine-year rule of former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
