Bayan Muna Rep.Carlos Isagani Zarate today said that the current brouhaha affecting rice importation is nothing new and should be looked into under a different paradigm.  "The primary objective of the National Food Authority (NFA) should be to help Filipino farmers and ensure rice self-sufficiency in the country. The funds for importation would be better off subsidizing or at least helping Filipino farmers instead of giving these to the Vietnamese or the Thais," added the Davao-based solon "The rice importation policy whether it be government to government or via private scheme will only drive our farmers to further bankruptcy. During Arroyo's and Aquino's time huge imports jacked up rice prices instead of lowering it, and, it will also do so now. This anti-farmer policy should be stopped,” said the progressive solon. "This has been a continuing problem from one administration to the other.  In the coming budget deliberation, we will carefully scrutinize the budgets of the DA and the NFA to ensure that our rice farmers will not be placed again at the losing end," said Rep. Zarate.###
