House Committee on Natural Resources Chair and Bayan Muna Partylist Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate expressed his support to the cancellation of 75 mining contracts by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).  "Sec. Gina's resolute stand for the environment and the people is commendable and needs our support. We salute her brave stand against the giants of mining and push for more sustainable, pro-environment reforms that is the mandate of her agency. Despite the destruction, protests, and human rights violations throughout the years, none of her predecessors in DENR had the guts to go against big mining interests," Rep. Zarate said. "This is a welcome development to environment activists, mine-affected communities, and all other people resisting the entry of and the destruction caused by large-scale mining in their lands. Onerous mining agreements in watershed areas have long been the subject of complaints as it affects water supply for irrigation and domestic use. The existence of these mining contracts in watershed areas is clearly anathema to our people's interests, if we want to ensure adequate, clean, and safe water supply for our people. These mineral contracts should not have come to pass if we have the people's welfare in mind," Rep. Zarate said.  "With the shutting of destructive mines and this latest development of the cancellation of mining contracts, there is truly an urgent need for a pro-people, pro-environment mining legislation to complement it. The war against large-scale and destructive mines has started, we enjoin our people to support the struggle," Rep. Zarate said, adding that the House Committee on Natural Resources that he chaired is prioritizing the deliberations of a new mining law legislation aimed at replacing the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.###
