BAYAN MUNA QUESTIONS PROPOSED SSS CONTRIBUTION INCREASE
Bayan Muna Chairman Neri Colmenares today questioned the supposed Social Security System (SSS) proposed contribution increase next year “wages remain low while prices are surging. Announcing a contribution increase right now is the last thing that SSS should do. The employers, the labor sector and all SSS members will surely oppose such a move especially since SSS has not even started its reforms to increase collection efficiency.SSS reforms muna in the next few years, and there may not even be a need for contribution increase if SSS does its job well” he added.
“In fact in Canada their fund life will expire in 2022, while in England it is 2027, now why is it that our SSS is so afraid that its fund life will fall between 2025-2028? Instead of harping on increasing contributions SSS should (1) improve its collection efficiency from the employers of its 31 Million members; (2) collect the billions in contributions, which delinquent employers failed to remit in the last ten years; (3) cut down in bonuses and perks given to its Board members and collect the disallowed more than P200 Million retirement package given to SSS Board Members in 2009 and (4) collect the fines imposed by the courts against employers who violated the SSS law,” Colmenares said.
“If this is not enough, then Congress can always provide for subsidies as provided under Section 20 of RA 8282 as amended. There is no way that the SSS will go bankrupt since under Section 21of the said law, the Philippine government guarantees the benefits and solvency of the SSS. Magtrabaho muna ang SSS para ayusin ang kanilang koleksyon at hindi ipasa lang sa taongbayan at mga miyembro ang trabahong palakasin ang pondo at koleksyon ng SSS premiums," added Colmenares.
“That is why we will still purse the passage of our SSS pension increase bill in Congress to ensure that the victories of our pensioners will not be taken back through an inordinate contribution increase,” ended Colmenares. ###
