Bayan Muna Rep.Carlos Isagani Zarate today called on the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to revoke the provisional authority it granted to Meralco allowing a P.66 per kilowatt hour power rate increase in March, and, at least P.22/kwh in April and May, respectively. “The power rate hike order is not only premature but highly questionable,” said the progressive solon. “First, the hearings on the rate hike only started Tuesday and numerous groups came forward to question and oppose it,” “Second, the circumstances surrounding the proposed rate increase now is very similar to the Malampaya shutdown power rate hike in 2013 that the Supreme Court stopped with a temporary restraining order (TRO) that until now is still in effect,” “Third, the ERC investigation report on the collusion in the 2013 Malampaya shutdown and power rate hike is still to be completed and reported to the public,”  “Fourth, it seems that the ERC is predisposed to the power rate hike because after granting the provisional order last week not one of them even bothered to attend let alone preside in yesterday's hearing, where intervenors and oppositors to the hike presented their cases” “More importantly, a lot of corruption issues now hound the ERC -- from anomalous redecoration contracts to midnight deals on power supply agreements,” explained the Davao-based solon. “We must not allow this to happen. We are calling on the people to launch protest actions against the ERC and Meralco to stop this,” ended Rep. Zarate.###
